Now that you mention it, I’m reminded that portable robots are used in telemedicine (http://www.gizmag.com/go/3459/). The Mantarobot is definitely sleeker and more maneuverable, and for $3500 it could very well be worth the amount of remote “barrier” it’s able to break down.

It currently uses Skype to connect the satellite worker to control the robot, though they are thinking about upgrading to a different video conferencing platform (for a variety of reasons that have been covered in various previous VSee blogs about Skype!). Mantaro says their goal is to be able to produce sufficiently cost effective robots that they could be used for more than one-off applications.
